Abstract: This article aims to analyze the relationship between undergraduate academic training of Sociology graduates from the National University of La Plata (UNLP) and their employment in government agencies. Currently, a significant number of sociology professionals work in areas of the provincial public administration, carrying out tasks related to data production, public policy design and evaluation, social diagnostics, the development of methodological tools, among others. These activities align with the degree program’s curriculum, which outlines a set of professional competencies specifically oriented toward such tasks. However, graduates often express the existence of a tension between the knowledge acquired in the classroom and the skills required in the workplace—or more precisely, between the theoretical knowledge from their academic training and the practical knowledge demanded by their professional roles. This research is empirically grounded in the fieldwork conducted for our undergraduate theses, through which we explore the meanings, tensions, and forms that sociology training assumes in preparing graduates for work in the public sector.
