Experiences of siblings in supporting students with special educational needs in inclusive education: a qualitative study

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This qualitative study explores the experiences of siblings in supporting their brothers and sisters with special educational needs (SEN) within inclusive education settings. Through in-depth, semi-structured interviews with 10 siblings from various regions of Kosovo, the study reveals the emotional, social, and practical dimensions of their involvement. Thematic analysis uncovered key challenges, including emotional stress, social stigma, and feelings of responsibility beyond their age. At the same time, siblings highlighted the importance of family cohesion, peer support, and open communication with teachers and assistants for students with SEN. Despite facing numerous challenges, many siblings demonstrated resilience and a strong commitment to advocating for their siblings' inclusion and well-being, with resilience defined as a dynamic process of positive adaptation in the face of adversity. Findings highlight the need for expanded support systems and family-centered educational policies.
