Abstract: TradiƟonal sociological contribuƟons (Tinto and Coulon) relate student integraƟon and affiliaƟon to issues of retenƟon and dropout in university campuses. This text seeks to go beyond, highlighƟng challenges such as spaƟotemporal compression and its repercussions on declining graduaƟon rates. Through exploratory research in a Brazilian federal university and inspired by the concept of emancipatory educaƟon (Freire, 2011), it idenƟfies that the rigidity of campus structure and disciplinary flowcharts, along with spaƟotemporal changes, negaƟvely affect the academic experience, necessitaƟng a redesign of university spaƟoƟme to promote student retenƟon and well-being.
