A monster map: chaos on a prefractal

Abstract: Two truncated versions of the Weierstrass function are implemented as one-dimensional maps. It is shown that, despite the complexity of the maps, their global Lyapunov exponents can, under certain conditions, be accurately approximated analytically. A number of classroom exercises are included to enable students to investigate the maps further.
