Minority-Serving Institutions’ Role in Enhancing Access to Computing Doctoral Education: A Multi-Method Landscape Analysis

Abstract: Despite consistent growth in computing-related fields, challenges persist in advancing racial equity—especially within doctoral programs. Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) increasingly offer graduate programs. Yet, MSIs are often overlooked in graduate student pathways to computing degrees and careers. Leveraging multiple methodological approaches to assess the attributes of MSIs with computing-related PhD programs, the present study uncovers distinct (a) geographical and institutional characteristics and (b) terminologies within program content and objectives. Overall, the study findings suggest important implications for equitable pathways to academia and industry in computing fields.
