Type: article
Abstract: Background Digital culture fosters rapid dissemination of information while offering anonymity, reducing obstacles for individuals inclined to copycat criminal activity. The present study examines the instances, nuances, and potential causes of copycat crimes. Methods A detailed analysis of previous research studies, news articles, and media content was conducted. Case vignettes from both Indian and global media were given special consideration. Data was methodically extracted from the chosen studies with an emphasis on specifics like the possible explanations for copycat crimes and contextual factors, followed by deriving the following themes: Digital culture and criminality, Violent media content related case analysis on copycat crimes, Media primarily serves as a catalyst or rudder for criminal activity and, Violent media and juvenile criminality. Findings Findings suggested a relationship between violent media and instances of juvenile criminality. Exposure to violent content not only aids learning and imitation but also primes and desensitizes their minds to aggression, catalyzing criminal activity. Media representations of violence create a hyperreality that makes sensationalized or fictionalized crimes seem plausible and attainable. Digital culture and criminality, coupled with technology, facilitate access to information regarding high-profile cases and criminals, contributing to the ‘celebrity obsession phenomenon.’ Conclusion The study concludes that violent media content is often viewed as a credible source of criminal knowledge and execution of criminal acts driven by nuanced imitation and reinforcement. The study underscores the need for responsible media reporting and integration of the impact of criminogenic media into criminal justice policies.
