Identification of antioxidant peptides from a bioactive peptide database PWDB of walnut family protein hydrolysates
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This study presents the establishment of Peptide from Walnut family Data Base (PWDB), a comprehensive peptide database derived from walnut family hydrolysates with molecular weights below 3 kDa. The database includes 3,894 high-confidence peptides identified using LC-MS/MS and computational analyses. Screening from PWDB revealed three core antioxidant peptides—WDPFE, FDPFP, and WDPNY—with significant free radical scavenging abilities and protective effects against oxidative stress. Molecular docking revealed strong interactions between these peptides and key antioxidant receptors (Keap1, MPO, XO), supporting their multi-target antioxidative potential. In vitro assays confirmed their ability to mitigate oxidative damage in Caco-2 cells, enhancing cellular viability and reducing reactive oxygen species (ROS). This study highlights the richness of the walnut family as a sustainable source of bioactive peptides, providing a valuable resource for developing natural antioxidants for functional foods and pharmaceuticals.
