Abstract: Electrical distribution systems are undergoing rapid transformation driven by high penetration of distributed energy resources (DERs), electrification of transport, digitalization, and evolving customer expectations. These transitions create multiple technical, operational, economic, and security challenges for Distribution System Operators (DSOs). This review synthesizes recent literature (2016–2025) to identify and analyze the principal challenges facing modern distribution networks: integration of DERs, voltage regulation and power quality, technical losses and energy efficiency, reliability and resilience, protection and control, aging infrastructure and asset management, impacts of electric vehicle (EV) charging, cybersecurity and data privacy, market/regulatory constraints, and forecasting & planning difficulties [1,2].
