Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The integration of renewable energy sources into existing power grids has prompted the development of microgrids to enhance grid resilience, reliability, and sustainability. This paper presents a comprehensive design and modelling approach for a hybrid microgrid incorporating Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices. The proposed microgrid configuration combines renewable energy sources such as solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind turbines with conventional generators and energy storage systems to ensure reliable power supply. The incorporation of FACTS devices, including Static Var Compensator (SVC) and Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC), enhances grid stability and power quality by dynamically controlling voltage and reactive power flow. The design methodology involves optimizing the microgrid components, including sizing of renewable energy sources and energy storage systems, to meet load demand while ensuring economic viability. The modelling framework utilizes advanced simulation tools to analyze the dynamic behavior of the hybrid microgrid under various operating conditions, considering factors such as intermittent renewable energy generation and load fluctuations.Case studies demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed design and validate the performance of FACTS devices in improving microgrid stability and resilience.Overall, this research contributes to the advancement of hybrid microgrid systems by integrating FACTS technology to address the challenges associated with renewable energy integration and grid operation.
