Long-term impacts of land cover change on nitrate export in mixed-use exurban and suburban watersheds
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: -N patterns. However, landscape metrics of developed land within riparian buffer zones, specifically patch cohesion and shape complexity, were positively correlated with elevated nitrate concentrations when values were averaged over 5-year intervals. These findings highlight the need for integrated watershed management that considers not only land use extent, but also spatial configuration within riparian zones, temporal lags, and seasonal nitrate dynamics.
