Leisure, tourism, and the importance of proximity to water: Insights from the resident population of Portugal
Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: The study explores the connection between water proximity and human activity, focusing on the importance of leisure in residences and the selection of tourist destinations for residents, with the hypothesis that locations with optimal quality of life are more popular. To this end, an online questionnaire was administered to the resident population in Portugal. The principal findings indicate that water was a significant factor in the decision-making process regarding the selection of a place of residence. The decision-making process of individuals is influenced by various factors, including the availability of leisure activities, the appeal of the surrounding landscape, the well-being conditions, and the tranquillity of the environment. In the preceding 12 months, most respondents have visited tourist destinations with water features. This study's findings aid territory managers in investing in and improving resident quality of life, attracting visitors, and promoting health and well-being.
