Abstract: Immobilized BioMOF Improves Sensitivity and RecyclabilityVibrations from solvent molecules significantly reduce REE-centered emission.By drying the BioMOF-coated fiber optic tip after REE exposure, the REE signal is significantly enhanced, enabling detection of trace REE content in spiked acid mine drainage samples. Moreover, regeneration and reuse of the sensing material is facilitated by immobilization.Future Directions: New Materials and Platforms Rare earth elements (REEs) are critical to many economic sectors, including energy and national defense, due to their use in high performance magnetics, optics, and catalysts, among other applications.Demand for REE-containing products is predicted to substantially increase, while the supply chain is threatened due to monopolistic market conditions. These factors have driven interest in the production of REEs from unconventional resources such as mine tailings and coal-utilization byproducts, which are enriched in REE content. However, current methods for characterizing REE content during both resource prospecting and process monitoring during production are slow, bulky, and expensive, presenting a significant barrier to domestic REE production.
