Gluten-free products: a strategy for a nutritionally appropriate, balanced diet for celiac patients and children
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The primary treatment for celiac disease (CD) is strict lifelong adherence to a gluten-free diet (GFD), avoiding wheat, barley, rye, and related grains. However, eliminating gluten can lead to nutritional deficiencies, especially in children, who require balanced nutrition for growth and development. This study highlighted the growing interest in improving the nutritional quality of gluten-free products (GFPs) and offers a comprehensive review of secondary research. It explored dietary recommendations, challenges in maintaining a GFD, and practical strategies to overcome them. Emphasis is placed on ensuring a balanced intake of essential nutrients, preventing cross-contamination, and promoting fortified or naturally nutrient-rich GFPs. The goal is to provide clear, evidence-based guidelines to help individuals with CD—particularly children—achieve a safe, nutritionally adequate, and sustainable gluten-free lifestyle.
