Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Sorangium is a genus of cellulose-degrading myxobacteria [1] and one of the most prolific producers of natural products among myxobacteria. These bacteria generate a wide range of bioactive compounds, including antibiotics, antifungals, and cytotoxins such as epothilones, chondramides, and soraphens [2][3][4].Antibacterial compounds identified from Sorangium species include etnangien, maracin, maracen, ripostatin, sorangiadenosine, sorangicin, sorangiolid, sorazinone, and thuggacin [4].Sorangium sp.KYC3313 was isolated from soil in a hilly forest area in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do, South Korea. This strain was selected for genome sequencing because it produces compounds exhibiting strong inhibitory activity against Cutibacterium acnes, a bacterium known to be a major cause of acne. The detailed screening procedures are described in a separate paper [5].KYC3313 was cultured in casitone-yeast extract-starch (CYS) medium supplemented with pieces of filter paper as a carbon source, and genomic DNA was extractedThe whole genome sequence of the cellulose-degrading myxobacterium Sorangium sp.KYC3313, isolated from soil in a hilly forest area in Yongin, South Korea, was determined and analyzed. The genome consists of a 12,350,246 bp circular chromosome with a G+C content of 71.48%, encoding 9,181 protein-coding genes, 12 rRNA genes, and 64 tRNA genes.Thirty-four secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters (smBGCs) were identified, although most could not be associated with known products, except those for carotenoids, eremophilene, etnangien, geosmin, and myxochelin. This genome provides a valuable resource for the discovery of novel bioactive secondary metabolites.
