Substantial enhancement of strength and corrosion resistance in magnesium alloy via a multi-component gradient heterostructure

Type: article
Abstract: The strategic design of heterogeneous structures in magnesium (Mg) alloys has demonstrated remarkable effectiveness in strength–ductility synergy, yet concurrent enhancement in corrosion resistance remains insufficiently addressed. Herein, we propose a novel gradient structure, which achieves a 509 MPa tensile strength with a tenfold reduction in corrosion rate. Excessive lattice defects may accelerate corrosion degradation in Mg alloy. Nevertheless, multi-component gradient heterostructure enables acquisition of a strengthening from heterogeneous defects while forming a corrosion-resistant surface layer through optimized precipitate morphology and distribution. Our results demonstrate a practical route to achieve attractive mechanical properties and highly corrosion resistance in Mg alloy.
