Sport-Concussion Identification and Attitudes and the Role of the Mass Media Broadcaster: Does it Matter What We See and Hear?
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Professional commentary in live sport broadcasts can mischaracterize concussion, potentially undermining audiences’ understanding and opinions about this commentary. An online experimental survey (N = 163) was conducted where participants saw footage of a suspected concussion with either no commentary, or high-, or low-quality commentary from a health perspective. No commentary effect was found for concussion identification or attitudes; however, there were ceiling effects on both measures, and secondary analyses revealed that the footage, and not the commentary, was most memorable to participants. Further studies are needed to determine if live broadcast commentary does play a role in public understanding of sport-concussion.
