Type: article
Abstract: Background/Objectives: Being diagnosed with cancer challenges a person's entire life situation. To provide patients and their family caregivers with the most effective care, in-terventions must be carefully tailored to the unique circumstances of each individual. The aim was to examine the feasibility of a developed person-centred nursing model targeting patient and family caregiver needs in allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Methods: The model involves systematic use of conversation tools with subsequent con-versations to assess and address the needs of patients, and their family caregivers. Pa-tients from two Swedish stem cell transplantation centres testing the model were includ-ed. To examine feasibility data were gathered from the tools and documented conversa-tions, and from interviews with patients, family caregivers and registered nurses. Results: 36 patients and 32 family caregivers participated. The conversations were generally con-ducted as intended in accordance with the model. Most identified needs were addressed by the registered nurses and the most common intervention was providing direct support to during the conversation. Most patients, family caregivers and registered nurses consid-ered the tools appropriate and satisfactory. Conclusions: The model adds a framework to be used for delivering person-centred nursing and the feasibility study demonstrated practicality and acceptability across multiple aspects of nursing. Clinical implementation challenges include clinical guidelines, support for addressing sensitive topics and sys-tems for follow-up.
