Abstract: Environmental education is a key component for achieving sustainable development, as it promotes behavioral change, ecological awareness, and active social participation. This article analyzes the importance of integrating environmental education into the Colombian educational system, highlighting its role as a strategy to promote sustainability in social, economic, and environmental dimensions. A documentary analysis of public policies, national regulations (1991 Constitution, Law 99 of 1993), and international programs such as the 2030 Agenda was carried out. The results show that environmental education must be understood as a cross-cutting process that fosters ethical values, critical thinking, and citizen commitment to ensure a balance between the use of natural resources and human well-being. The study concludes that in order to achieve an effective impact, it is essential to strengthen teacher training, involve communities in the creation of school environmental projects, and ensure institutional support.
