Brain Computer Interfaces in Neuropsychiatry

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The introduction of Brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) has revolutionized the treatment of mental disorders, enabling novel capabilities in the tracking, analyzing, and stimulation of the brain's processes and activities using programs tailored for specific mental disorders (Maiseli et al., 2023). This review examines the application of BCIs in neuropsychiatric illnesses like major depressive disorder (MDD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). By providing neural decoding, BCIs instill more direct and customized care. Although brain-computer interfaces may improve neuropsychiatric disorders, their application in the field introduces numerous ethical and social issues such as behavioral privacy, informed consent, and unequal distribution of psychiatric services. (Revolutionizing Mental Health: The Impact of Brain-Computer Interfaces, 2024). Without ethical oversight, BCIs can bring countless changes to the practice of psychiatry for patients with complex mental-health challenges.
