Hacer trabajo de campo o experimental para estudiar la (in)definitud en portuñol

Abstract: Portuñol, though it has been studied form a sociolinguistics perspective, and a syntactic perspective (Elizaincín, Behares & Barrios 1987, Albertoni 2021, Bottaro 2009, Carvalho & Bessett 2015, Carvalho 2003, 2016, Gasque, Chaves & Simioni 2018, Simioni 2019, 2021), is an underrepresented language in theoretical linguistics research. This contact language, spoken in the border of Uruguay and Brazil, emerges from the contact of Portuguese and Spanish. This fact has been taken into consideration in the discussion on whether it is based on Portuguese, it is a mixed language, or if it is an independent language (see Carvalho 2022). Lipski (2006) has defended that it is a mixed language, Carvalho (2022) has defended that it is a dialect of rural Brazilian Portuguese, while Simioni (2019) that it involves an independent grammar. Most evidence has been provided from phonological, lexical and some syntax aspects. Regardless of the theoretical perspective the researchers assume, it is possible to establish that Portuñol, since it is a contact language between two languages with articles, has a determiners paradigm both with definite and indefinite articles (Leonetti, 2016, Pires de Oliveira 2012, Ferreira, 2021, among others). We need to start to understand how that paradigm is realized in Portuñol. This article intends to be another source for the discussion of these grammatical characteristics of Portuñol. Specifically, it intends to go forward with the discussion on whether to study meaning of underrepresented languages it is better to use fieldwork methodology or experimental methodology (Mattwheson, 2022, Davidson, 2020, among others). Basically, it intends to decide whether to analyze sentence meaning in Portuñol it is better to do fieldwork or experimental semantics (or if both are complementary).
