Abstract: Emilio Gabba’s work on the transformation of the civic militia into a professional army represents a milestone in the historiography of the late Republic. However, these studies hold a paradoxical place within his scholarly output: fewer in number than his works on other themes, they are also more influenced by certain interpretative biases. This article offers some reflections on this issue.
