Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Introduction: The Surgical Apgar Score (SAS) is a simple intraoperative tool used to predict postoperative outcomes. Assessing the relationship between surgical risk, surgical complexity, and SAS may enhance early identication of patients at risk of complications. The study aims to evaluate the association between surgical risk score, complexity, and post-surgical outcome using Surgical Apgar Score. Material And Methods: Nonprobability, purposive sampling technique was used to select the sample. The study was conducted in the Surgical Intensive Care Unit of MGM Medical College and Hospital, Kamothe, Navi Mumbai. A total of 270 post-operative patients were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using a validated standardized tool, including the Surgical Risk Score, Surgical Complexity Score and the Surgical Apgar Score. Descriptive and inferential statistics were applied to determine associations and correlations. Result: Among the 270 patients, 65.9% were categorized as high risk and 28.1% as intermediate risk. Most patients 57.4% had average post-surgical outcomes. While trends suggested that patients with lower Surgical Apgar Score were more likely to have complications, the association between Surgical Risk, Complexity and Outcomes were not statistically signicant. Conclusion: Surgical Apgar Score is a useful intraoperative tool, this study found no signicant association between Surgical Risk or Complexity and post-operative outcomes as measured by the Surgical Apgar Score.
