Abstract: I read with interest the recent article by Bay et al. (2024), which explores midwifery students’ perceptions of their confidence in fulfilling the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) competencies. Their research highlights a key issue, whereby students must leave training not just with clinical expertise but with the confidence to apply it safely and compassionately. Building on their findings, I wish to highlight two effective strategies, namely simulation and supportive mentorship, that can help build both competence and self-confidence.
