Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: Background Automation-compatible blood collection devices are essential for improving laboratory efficiency and workflow. BD Microtainer® MAP microtubes were designed for use with automated track systems, such as the Sysmex XN-9000 hematology analyzer. This study evaluated the impact of BD Microtainer® MAP microtubes compared to traditional BD Microtainer® tubes on workflow efficiency in a high-volume laboratory. Methods A four-week workflow study was conducted in the hematology department. Blood samples were collected using both BD Microtainer® MAP microtubes and BD Microtainer® tubes. All samples were processed on the Sysmex XN-9000 analyzer. Key workflow metrics included sample processing time, manual handling events, and turnaround time (TAT). Results Using BD Microtainer® MAP microtubes reduced TAT for stat specimens by 18 minutes and routine specimens by 15 minutes. Manual handling events decreased by over 50% due to the microtubes’ seamless integration into the automated track system. The reduction in manual handling led to overall cost savings by optimizing technologist time and improving workflow efficiency. Laboratory staff reported increased satisfaction with BD Microtainer® MAP microtubes, citing ease of use, reliability, and compatibility with automation. Conclusion BD Microtainer® MAP microtubes improved workflow efficiency when used with the Sysmex XN-9000 analyzer. They reduced manual interventions, improved TAT, and enhanced overall operational performance. Their automation-friendly design offers a practical solution for high-volume laboratories seeking to optimize hematology workflows.
