Neocolonialismos em prática: movimentos quilombolas e as novas dimensões de dominação na ilha do Marajó (PA)

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: This article aims to present the historical process of the quilombola movements of Salvaterra, on the island of Marajó/PA, tracing the trajectory from colonial resistance to contemporary neocolonial configurations and the forms of confrontation constructed by the quilombola movement. It starts from the understanding that European colonialism established a coloniality of power and that current neocolonialism reconfigures this logic through agroindustrial investments, infrastructure works and state incentives, deepening dependence and inequality. Methodologically, a qualitative approach was adopted, with a bibliographic review in SciELO and Google Scholar, semi-structured interviews with residents of the communities of Campinas/Vila União and Mangueiras, participant observation, field diary records and photographic documentation. The field research took place in 2024, with seven visits distributed throughout the year. The results show that, despite the forms of neocolonialism, the quilombola movement develops diverse organizational forms, both formal and informal, ranging from registered associations to carimbó and craft groups. These initiatives reveal complex processes of cultural adaptation, reinforcement of collective identity and construction of new territorialities that articulate practices of political and symbolic resistance. Finally, the article highlights the centrality of quilombola identity as an instrument of struggle for territorial recognition and protection in the face of the changes brought about by neocolonialism.
