Agroecology in a Community Garden for the Elderly

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Objective: The present study aimed to address the benefits of a community agro-food garden geared toward the elderly as part of an outreach initiative by the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) called Open University for the Elderly (UnAPI). Theoretical Framework: Agroecology is a technique that encompasses methods based on sustainable agri-food systems. In this way, the technique helps to combine health, nutrition, and respect for the environment. Its application in activities with older adults enables active aging, autonomy, and well-being. Method: To this end, theoretical and practical methodologies were implemented with a focus on creating an agroecological vegetable garden, including lectures and workshops to train the elderly in preparing the site. Seedlings of kale, cabbage, coriander, and other vegetables were planted. Results and Discussion: The project had a big impact on the older folks, since it not only helped them eat a balanced and organic diet, but also helped them get stronger and sharper. Implications of the Research: The study demonstrated important implications, as it points to agroecology as an effective tool in promoting the health and inclusion of older adults. Originality Value: Similarly, it presented important values for the academic community, as it highlighted the relevance of agri-food alternatives today. The UnAPI vegetable garden project demonstrated the great significance of including the elderly population in current issues and also contributed to the well-being of a segment of the population that is often ignored.
