P074 Sleep deprivation, personality and performance in sleep disordered young adults.

Year: 2025
Type: conference-abstract
Abstract: Introduction Cognitive performance during sleep deprivation is affected by individual differences, including personality. Performance may be further impacted by sleep disorders. This study aimed to determine relationships between personality dimensions, cognitive performance and perceived workload after sleep deprivation in young adults with unmanaged sleep disorders. Method Personality dimensions were assed using NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) in 24 young adults aged 18–32 years (Mean(SD) = 25.0(3.9), 42% female) who met diagnostic criteria for insomnia (n = 14) or delayed sleep wake phase disorder (n = 10) but had no prior diagnosis or treatment. The psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) was performed at 2hours and 20hours after wake. Reciprocal reaction time (RTT; 1/ mean reaction-time) and attentional lapses were used to determine performance. The NASA Task Load Index (NASA-TLX) assessed subjective workload following PVT. Data were analysed using linear and mixed effects regression. Results Reduced RRT (3.02(0.56) v 2.22(0.77), p<.001), and increased lapses (3(7) v 15(13), p<.001) were observed at 20h compared to 2h. Subjective workload was greater at 20h wake (all dimensions p<.05), with the exception of temporal demand (p=.42). Higher extraversion was associated with higher perceived temporal demand (B = 1.0, 95%CI = 0.4, 1.7, p=.002), greater perceived performance (B = 0.8, 95%CI = 0.1, 1.5, p=.031), and greater frustration (B = 1.0, 95%CI = 0.1, 1.8, p=.033), but not with objective differences in performance during sleep deprivation. Discussion There was a discrepancy between perceived and actual performance in individuals with higher extraversion scores. Future studies could consider whether this impacts behaviours and safety decisions of more extraverted individuals when sleep deprived.
