“Losing Sleep Over Likes”:The Role of Bedtime Procrastination and Self-Control in the Link Between Social Media Addiction, Depression, and Anxiety

Type: preprint
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: In recent years, social media has become a dominant force shaping the daily lives of individuals, particularly adolescents and young adults. Given its pervasive presence, understanding the potential impact of social media use on psychological well-being has become increasingly important. This study investigates the roles of bedtime procrastination and self-control in the relationship between social media addiction and two key indicators of mental health: depression and anxiety. Findings show that higher social media addiction is linked to increased depression and anxiety symptoms, partially mediated by bedtime procrastination. Individuals with greater addiction tend to delay bedtime, which correlates with heightened psychological distress. However, self-control did not significantly moderate these relationships. The results highlight the need to address unhealthy digital habits and sleep behaviors to support mental health in young people.
