Research progress on aggregate loss in asphalt pavement

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: As a primary material in modern road pavement structures, asphalt mixture exhibits excellent performance characteristics, including strength, durability, and temperature stability. Consequently, it is extensively employed in highway and airport pavements. The occurrence of potholes in asphalt pavements is primarily associated with aggregate loss. Different scholars have presented diverse analyses regarding the mechanism of aggregate loss in asphalt pavements. The mechanisms can be broadly categorized into two aspects: one is that the external load exceeds the bonding force, and the other is the failure of asphalt cohesion and of asphalt-aggregate adhesion. To assess aggregate loss in asphalt pavements, various experimental techniques and testing methods are utilized. These mainly encompass the immersion Marshall test, rutting test, Cantabro test, wet wheel wear test, and rotating surface abrasion test, among others. For the simulation of aggregate loss in asphalt pavements, the finite element method and discrete element method are available. In response to aggregate loss, effective maintenance methods and materials can be proposed to enhance road safety and service life.
