A comprehensive framework for evaluating climate change-induced social vulnerability in fragile ecosystems
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Climate change-induced social vulnerability in fragile ecosystems is a global concern, as communities in these regions often face heightened risks due to environmental degradation, socio-economic instability, and limited adaptive capacities. Research analyzes the comprehensive framework for evaluating social vulnerability in areas most affected by climate change, with a focus on fragile ecosystems. A variety of socioeconomic and biophysical variables gathered from reliable sources are integrated into this framework, and the Composite Vulnerability Index (CVI) is used to assign weights to the indicators. Vulnerability was assessed as the combined effect of environmental exposure, governance and political indicators, and sensitivity on adaptive capacity. Environmental exposure includes factors such as extreme weather events, land degradation, and deforestation, which directly affect the livelihoods of communities. Governance and political indicators encompass policy measures, institutional frameworks, and governance structures that influence the ability of communities to adapt and mitigate risks. The data was analyzed using SPSS software to ensure accuracy and reliability in assessing these variables. The results show that the most susceptible area was found to be significantly vulnerable, while the least vulnerable area was shown to be less vulnerable. This negative vulnerability impact highlights the need for focused adaptation initiatives in these high-risk locations and points to a concerning trend. Research emphasizes the significance of utilizing a comprehensive approach to analyze and mitigate climate change effects on vulnerable communities in fragile ecosystems. By developing and implementing well-informed adaptation initiatives, the negative effects of climate change on fragile ecosystems can be mitigated. This research serves as a vital reference for policymakers and stakeholders, providing valuable insights into the necessity of urgent action in addressing climate-induced vulnerability. Ensuring sustainability in fragile ecosystems is imperative to safeguard the well-being of communities and the environment against the long-term impacts of climate change.
