Rising Prevalence of Spectacle Use in Children: an Ayurvedic Perspective on Causes, Prevention, and Management
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The prevalence of spectacle use among children in India has been rising at an alarming rate, primarily due to excessive screen time, poor dietary habits, reduced outdoor activities, and genetic predisposition. This article explores the increasing incidence of weak eyesight in younger children, supported by statistical data and trends. From an Ayurvedic perspective, vision impairment is associated with Pitta vitiation and unhealthy lifestyle choices. Ayurveda offers holistic management, including Triphala, Netra Tarpana, and Ghrita, which play a vital role in maintaining ocular health. Nutritional deficiencies, particularly Vitamin A and carotenoids, are also key contributors to early-onset vision problems. Preventive measures, such as digital detox, Ayurvedic therapies, a balanced diet, and specific eye exercises (Trataka, Netra Vyayama), can help reduce dependence on spectacles. This article provides a comparative discussion between modern causative factors and Ayurvedic interventions, while emphasising practical solutions to curb the increasing prevalence of spectacle use among children.
