A Conceptual Review of Grahani Roga With Special Reference to Gastrointestinal Diseases – an Ayurvedic Perspective
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Background: Grahani Roga, one of the major gastrointestinal disorders described in Ayurveda, is primarily rooted in dysfunc-tion of Agni (digestive fire) and is often equated with modern conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), malabsorption syndromes, and chronic diarrhoea. The Grahani organ, considered a vital site for digestion and absorption, when afflicted, leads to systemic disturbances. Objective: To explore the Ayurvedic concept of Gra-hani Roga, its etiopathogenesis, symptomatology, and management, while correlating it with analogous gastroin-testinal disorders in modern medicine. Methodology: A critical review of classical Ayurvedic texts, including the Charaka Samhita, Sushruta Samhita, and Ashtanga Hridaya, as well as contemporary scientific literature on gastrointestinal diseases, was conducted. Relevant data were analysed thematically. Results: The Ayurvedic understanding of Grahani Roga encompasses the dysfunction of Jatharagni, Dosha imbalance, and Ama for-mation. Modern correlations like IBS, Celiac Disease, and chronic enteritis share similarities in symptoms and pathogenesis. Ayurvedic management involves Agni Deepana, Ama Pachana, Shodhana (Panchakarma), and Rasayana therapy. Conclusion: Grahani Roga reflects a deep-rooted dysfunction in the digestive and absorptive processes. A comprehensive Ayurvedic approach, focusing on Agni restoration and Dosha pacification, offers promising insights for holistically managing chronic gastrointestinal disorders.
