Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: Introduction: Kidney stone is common in urology and it still a health problem. Gender has association with the high prevalency of kidney stone. Men have higher risk to get kidney stone, even though the disparity between genders is close nowadays. This trend deviation raises questions about the risk factors of kidney stone in different genders. Methods: A cross sectional study was conducted at Kardinah Hospital, Tegal, Indonesia. The data was taken from medical records to analyze variables associated with risk factors for kidney stone disease among men and women, including age, BMI, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, family history of kidney stone disease, urinary calcium/24 h, urinary oxalate/24 h, serum uric acid, and urine volume /24 h. The obtained data were analyzed using a chi-square or Fisher’s exact Test as an alternative. Results: A hundred patients with kidney stone disease were enrolled in this study. Men were 58 patients (58%) and women were 42 patients (42%). The mean age was 53.4 (+ 1.2). Hypercalciuria was a risk factor contributed in men with kidney stone disease PR 1.7 (p = 0.02, 95% CI 1.3-2.2). Conclusion: Among risk factors analyzed in this study, hypercalciuria was associated with kidney stone disease in men. More study is needed with a large sample size and well-designed study to obtain adequate conclusions.
