Abstract: Background: Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) has been the gold standard for the surgical treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) for decades. This study aims to describe the characteristics of the first 80 patients who underwent TURP at a new urology service at Wangaya General Hospital, Bali, Indonesia. Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study. Data were obtained from the medical records of patients who underwent TURP in 2019. The inclusion criteria comprise male patients who had TURP and possess complete medical records, including age, transabdominal ultrasonography (TAUS) data, primary symptoms, and post-operative pathology results. Exclusion criteria include patients with established or presumed prostate cancer prior to TURP, having a history of prior prostate surgery, and untraceable prior to post-operative assessment. Results: Eighty patients who underwent TURP in 2019 were included as study subjects. The mean age of the patients was 68.81 ± 8.68 years. TAUS parameters consisted of mean prostate volume and intravesical prostatic protrusion (IPP) were 64.88 ± 36.22 ml and 5.72 ± 8.29 mm, respectively. Patients with concurrent bladder stones were 27.5%, and hydronephrosis was 17.5%. Eighty-five percent subjects presented initially with acute urinary retention. BPH + chronic prostatitis was the most common post-operative pathology result (88.8%). Others were BPH (6.3%), prostate cancer (3.8%), and atypical small acinar proliferation (ASAP) + BPH + chronic prostatitis (1.3%). These results were consistent with other similar studies. Conclusion: The findings emphasize the necessity of prompt diagnosis and suitable management of BPH to avert urinary complications and the requirement for surgical intervention.
