Application of Saptopakrama in Vidradhi Management

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Vidradhi, described by Acharya Sushruta as “rapidly destructive”, is a critical pathological condition in Ayurve-da, resembling abscess formation in modern medicine. This review examines the classical Ayurvedic under-standing of Vidradhi, focusing on its aetiology (Nidana), pathophysiology (Samprapti), clinical features (Roopa), types (Prakara), complications (Upadrava), prognosis (Sadhya-Asadhyata), and therapeutic protocols. Sushruta's approach categorises Vidradhi into two kinds: Bahya (external) and Abhyantara (internal), with doshic predominance forming the basis for further subtypes. The disease progresses through Ama, Pachyamana, and Pakva stages, requiring tailored interventions. Central to the management is the Saptopakrama holistic sev-enfold therapeutic approach comprising Vimlapana, Avasechana, Upanaha, Patana, Shodhana, Ropana, and Vaikritapaham. These methods facilitate decongestion, drainage, wound debridement, tissue regeneration, and cosmetic restoration. By correlating Ayurvedic descriptions with modern clinical insights, this paper highlights the relevance and efficacy of classical wound management practices. The review emphasises the importance of stage-wise diagnosis and intervention, highlighting that improper surgical timing can result in severe complica-tions. Thus, Vidradhi Chikitsa provides a structured, integrative framework for managing abscesses, with an em-phasis on individualised care and holistic healing.
