Abstract: Interferon beta (IFN-β), specifically IFN-β1a (or IFN-β1alpha), is used to treat multiple sclerosis. A linguistic error in which the Greek letter beta (β) has been replaced by the German letter Eszett (ß) has resulted in the emergence of a “new” and non-existent compound, “Eszett (ß)-interferon”. This letter examines 68 PubMed-indexed papers with this error.
