Allergen Information for Non-Prepacked Foods: Key Findings From Consumers and Food Service Workers
Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: This report presents baseline findings on the provision of allergen information for non-prepacked foods, based on surveys of food service workers and consumers with food hypersensitivities (FHS). It also draws on trend data from the Food Standards Agency’s Food and You 2 survey to provide broader context. The findings show that while most businesses report providing allergen information, consumers do not always recall receiving it — particularly when it is not clearly signposted or proactively offered. Although many consumers feel comfortable asking for allergen information, a significant minority do not, which can act as a barrier to safe food choices. Staff are generally seen as helpful, but perceptions of their knowledge vary, suggesting a need for continued training and support. Consumers generally feel more confident in written allergen information than information provided verbally by staff. These baseline insights will inform future evaluation of the FSA’s best practice guidance and support ongoing efforts to improve allergen communication in the out-of-home food sector.
