Comparison of Gut Microbiota Composition in Type 2 Diabetes Remission and Non-Remission (COMMUTER Study) — A Systematic Review
Year: 2025
Type: review
Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: Introduction : The gut microbiota linked to metabolic improvement in patient with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2D), but the outcome between study remain heterogenous. The purpose of this study is to summarize the existing evidence about difference gut microbiome composition and diversion between patient T2D achieve remission and non-remission through various intervention. Method : The PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane database were searched for study article that explore comparison of gut microbiota composition of pre-T2D or T2D patients who achieve remission (DR) and non-remission (NDR), accordance with the Preferred Reporting Items for systematic Reviews and Meta-analysis (PRISMA). The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal checklist uses to evaluate the quality of the article. Result : A total 8 studies included with total 338 participants (151 achieve DR and 187 NDR). Five studies used bariatric surgery for the main intervention. Most of studies show the increase abundance of Ruminoccoccus sp, Firmicutes genus, Alistipes sp in participant achieve Diabetic remission, while the abundance of Bacteroides, Desulfovibrio, Escherecia coli increase significantly in participants not achieve remission. The contribution of that microbiome to the T2D remission was through production of specific microbial metabolites. Conclusion: The gut microbiome composition shifted in patients achieved remission compared to those without remission. These changes were influenced by factors like the intervention used and the initial microbiome composition. Additionally, meta-analyses are needed to quantify microbiome changes following T2D remission
