Study design: Systematic Review
Abstract: The global microalgae market is growing rapidly, driven by the demand for sustainable solutions. Among microalgae, Spirulina stands out due to its versatile applications and nutritional benefits, attracting significant consumer interest. However, there is a gap in understanding consumer perspectives on Spirulina, as existing studies focus mainly on its physical and chemical properties. This systematic scoping review addresses this gap by examining factors influencing consumer attitudes, intentions and acceptance of Spirulina ( Limnospira platensis ). Market studies were also included. Health benefits, such as high protein, lipid, vitamin, and bioactive compound content, are primary drivers of acceptance. Spirulina's applications extend to human nutrition, animal feed, medicine and cosmetics industry. However, barriers like unfavourable taste and food neophobia hinder acceptance. The review highlights the need for targeted marketing strategies, product innovations, and further research into consumer behaviour across different regions and demographics to enhance market penetration of this emerging functional food. • The global microalgae market, especially Spirulina, is growing. • Spirulina’s health benefits drive consumer acceptance. • Barriers include unfavorable taste and food neophobia. • Targeted strategies and product innovations are needed for market development.
