Palm oil boiler ash as a viable substitute for cement
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The cement industry significantly contributes to CO₂ emissions and air pollution. Substituting cement with waste materials like palm oil boiler ash (POBA) offers a promising solution. Developing palm cement (PC) products with POBA can reduce waste and unlock economic value. This study explores using POBA as a partial clinker replacement in cement, with substitution levels ranging from 10% to 30%. The mechanical performance of PC samples with varying nSO₂ content (0-3%) is evaluated through compressive strength analysis and deformation characteristics assessment. This study aimed to optimize POBA content in PC for superior mechanical properties, potentially yielding a more environmentally friendly alternative to ordinary Portland cement (OPC) with reduced carbon emissions. The results indicated that PC samples with 9% and 19% POBA substitutions, combined with 1% nSO₂, exhibited optimal mechanical performance, closely approaching that of OPC. Using POBA offers an innovative approach to reducing environmental impact while valorizing palm oil waste.
