Outcome of Combined Intramedullary Nail and Plate Fixation in Proximal Tibia Fractures, A Prospective Study

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: BACKGROUND: Proximal tibia fractures are complex injuries that often require stable fixation to ensure proper alignment and early mobilization. Combined intramedullary nailing and plate fixation has emerged as a promising technique, especially in challenging fracture patterns. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the functional and radiological outcomes of proximal tibia fractures treated with combined intramedullary nail and plate fixation. METHODOLOGY: A prospective observational study was conducted at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences, Ranchi, from November 2023 to February 2025. Thirty patients aged 18-70 years with proximal tibia fractures were treated using combined fixation. Functional outcomes were assessed using the Oxford Knee Score, radiological healing with Radiographic Union Score for Tibia (RUST) score, and complications were recorded. Follow-ups were conducted at 1.5, 3, 6, and 12 months postoperatively. RESULTS: Significant improvements were observed in RUST scores ( P = 0.0001) and Oxford Knee Score ( P = 0.001) over time. Most patients achieved full weight-bearing by 12 months with minimal complications. CONCLUSION: Combined fixation provides excellent functional outcomes, early union, and low complication rates, making it a reliable option for managing proximal tibia fractures.
