Electrification of sorption enhanced gasification: Introduction of a novel fluidized bed reactor system

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: An advanced multi-fluidized bed reactor system for sorption enhanced gasification (SEG) of biomass is proposed, which enables improved biomass conversion via the integration of electricity as external heat source. SEG, realized by utilizing limestone as heat - and CO2 carrier in a dual fluidized bed reactor, is a promising process for the in-situ and simultaneous generation of a H2-enriched product gas suitable for synthesis and a separate CO2-enriched flue gas stream. With the functionalities of two additional reactors, the partial supply of the necessary heat of reaction for the endothermic biomass gasification and the calcination of CaCO3 is enabled by electric heating. The consequently lower demand for combustion of residual char or recirculated product gas in the combustion reactor leads to an improved biomass-to-product gas conversion rate. Design considerations for the individual reactors are stated. Process simulation is applied to determine the mass - and energy balances of the individual reactors and to compare the electrified overall process to classical SEG by means of key performance indicators (KPI) as well as carbon and exergy flow diagrams of a simulated, representative operating point. Thereby, compared to the state-of-the-art the novel reactor concept can increase the specific product gas yield by up to 80 %. The required electricity demand for indirect heating of the process is about 39 % of the thermal fuel input. Additionally, the impact of critical process parameters on the KPIs is studied via a sensitivity analysis.
