Consumer personas for CPAP purchasing in older adults with obstructive sleep apnea: a hospital database study

Year: 2025
Type: article
Study design: Observational Study
Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Even though a continuous positive airway pressure machine (CPAP) is effective in obstructive sleep apnea in older adults, there is limited data on predictors of CPAP purchasing in older adults with OSA. This study aimed to evaluate the consumer personas associated with CPAP purchasing in older adults with OSA. METHODS: This was a retrospective analytical study. The inclusion criteria were older adults aged 60 years or more, diagnosed with OSA, and already made a decision of CPAP purchasing. Consumer personas with CPAP purchasing in older adults with OSA were executed. RESULTS: There were 104 older adults with OSA met the study criteria. Of those, 44 patients (42.31%) decided to purchase CPAP. Three factors were independently associated with CPAP purchasing in the older adults with OSA: female sex, allergic rhinitis, and AHI. Female sex and AHI had adjusted odds ratios (95% confidence interval) of 6.78 (1.25, 36.67) and 1.05 (1.01, 1.09), while allergic rhinitis was negatively associated with CPAP purchasing. CONCLUSIONS: Consumer personas of older adults with OSA who tended to purchase CPAP were female sex and high AHI, while the presence of allergic rhinitis was a negative factor for CPAP purchasing in this setting.
