Enhancing Pro-environmental Behavior Through Participatory Action Research: A Community-based Waste Management Intervention
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The growing difficulties of waste management in urban environments highlight the need to encourage pro-environmental behavior. Reducing environmental damage, safeguarding public health, and building sustainable communities depend on efficient waste management. This study looks at a community-based intervention that uses Participatory Action Research (PAR) to enhance pro-environmental behavior in Bandulan Village, Malang City, Indonesia. Through environmental awareness programs and waste processing using the Takakura method, the intervention aimed to increase the residents’ comprehension and awareness of appropriate waste management. The study involved 20 participants. To ascertain the impact of the intervention, semi-structured interviews were used to gather qualitative data. According to participant responses in the interviews, the intervention was successful in raising participants’ knowledge and comprehension of environmental issues and waste management. This type of community-based intervention has the potential to promote sustainable waste management practices and behavioral change, both of which support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
