An Integrated Performance Model for Kabaddi: The Synergy of Biomotor Abilities and Psychomotor Control
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Introduction: Performance in Kabaddi, a sport of intense physical contact and tactical complexity, is often attributed to superior biomotor abilities like speed, strength, and power. However, this perspective overlooks the critical role of psychomotor control, which includes coordination, balance, and the unique physiological and psychological demand of the "cant" (a continuous, one-breath chant). A holistic understanding requires a model that integrates these domains. Objective: This paper proposes an integrated performance model for Kabaddi that synthesizes fundamental biomotor abilities with essential psychomotor regulation skills. It reframes the benefits of specific training modalities, such as ladder drills and drop jumps, as enhancers of the synergy between the physical and cognitive aspects of the game. Model Framework: Drawing upon the foundational research, we propose a two-pillar model. Pillar 1: Biomotor Foundations comprises the core physical attributes of speed, muscular strength, and explosive power, which are the primary force-producers in the game. Pillar 2: Psychomotor Regulation includes the control-oriented attributes of agility, balance, flexibility, and coordination. This pillar governs the efficient application of force. The "cant" is presented as a unique element that bridges both pillars, demanding both physiological endurance and psychological focus. Discussion: The paper argues that training methods like ladder drills and drop jumps derive their efficacy not just from enhancing isolated variables, but from strengthening the link between these two pillars. For example, ladder drills improve agility by heightening neuromuscular coordination (psychomotor), allowing for a more effective expression of speed (biomotor) in game situations. Similarly, drop jumps improve balance and coordination (psychomotor), leading to more controlled and powerful movements (biomotor). Conclusion: Elite Kabaddi performance is the product of a deeply integrated system of physical and psychomotor skills. This model provides a framework for coaches and sports scientists to develop more holistic training programs that move beyond simple conditioning to cultivate the crucial mind-body connection essential for success in Kabaddi
