Abstract: Context: Modern supply chains continue to face persistent challenges, including limited transparency, data tampering, and inefficient traceability mechanisms. While blockchain offers promising features such as decentralization, trustworthiness, and data immutability, existing blockchain-based supply chain applications exhibit rigid and inflexible architectures, where the absence of modular and reusable abstractions constrains system customizability, hinders business scalability, and restricts cross-domain adaptability. Objectives: The objective of this study is to overcome the lack of a flexible solution for blockchain-based supply chain system development that supports customization across domains while enhancing development efficiency. Methods: To achieve this, we propose a customizable framework for blockchain-based supply chain system generation by combining Domain-Driven Design (DDD) with the microkernel architectural style. DDD is employed to abstract supply chain processes into decoupled domain models, which are subsequently modularized into kernel and plug-in components under the microkernel style, thereby enabling flexible customization across diverse industries. A prototype was implemented on Hyperledger Fabric with a multi-blockchain architecture and evaluated through case studies in representative industries, including healthcare, steel, and cross-border seafood supply chains. Results: Compared with traditional approaches without our framework, the evaluation results demonstrate that the blockchain-based supply chain systems generated by our framework achieve customizable construction, provide 90%–100% coverage of expected functionality in different cases, and reduce development effort by 30%–40%. Conclusion: The framework demonstrates customizability, adaptability, and efficiency in system development, providing a practical pathway for accelerating blockchain adoption in heterogeneous supply chain industries.
