Study and Control of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) in Printed Circuit Boards

Year: 2025
Type: preprint
Abstract: The modern electronic system demands Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) as a vital design element because of advancing circuit complexity together with higher operating frequencies and strict regulatory requirements. Printed circuit boards function as electronic integration backbones that face the highest vulnerability to electromagnetic interference which stems from simultaneous switching noise together with crosstalk and power distribution network resonances and radiation. This review paper provides a thorough analysis of PCB EMC/EMI problems through an examination of basic mechanisms and modeling approaches and current control methods. The paper combines analytical data with numerical evidence and experimental results to explain noise generation mechanisms and their transmission paths along with effective noise reduction techniques. The paper provides a detailed analysis of layout optimization together with ground and power plane management and decoupling strategies as well as shielding and filtering and material selection methods. The paper presents future directions for EMI/EMC control in PCB design through a review of machine learning-based EMC prediction along with 3D field solvers and flexible substrates and system co-design methods.
