Interlayered Solid Electrolyte Architecture for Lithium Dendrite Suppression in Lithium Metal Batteries
Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: The presented solid electrolyte architecture guarantees significantly improved damage tolerance, battery performance, and safety for lithium metal batteries through lithium dendrite control. Lithium dendrite growth through solid electrolytes presents a critical safety concern due to the risk of internal short-circuiting. The proposed architecture is a laminated solid electrolyte with an internal interlayer composed of reduced graphene oxide. The interlayer is designed to deflect lithium dendrite filaments that grow within solid electrolytes in lithium metal batteries. The mechanical properties as well as the mixed ionic-electronic conductive properties of graphene oxide leverage both mechanical and electrochemical deflection of lithium dendrites. This novel architecture is compatible with a range of solid electrolyte materials and can be adapted to various battery configurations. Collaboration and industrial partnerships are welcomed to further develop and scale this technology for battery manufacturing and system-level applications.
