Using surface nuclear magnetic resonance for the hydrodynamic characterization of groundwater in semi-arid areas

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: ABSTRACT This study investigates the application of Surface Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (SNMR) technology for groundwater assessment in the Oued El Seddeur field, Algeria, a key area supplying drinking water to the city of Djelfa through more than twenty wells over an area of 50 hectares. Field measurements were conducted using Vista Clara's Giant Magnetic Resonance (GMR) device across 16 survey sites, and the acquired data were integrated into 3D models and longitudinal sections to characterize aquifer geometry and water content distribution. The results revealed two main aquifer systems: the Albian aquifer at depths ranging from 25 to 85 m, and the Barremian aquifer exceeding 90 m, indicating significant water reserves. The consistency observed between aquifer depths derived from GMR data and available well measurements enhanced the reliability of the methodology despite the limited piezometric information. Beyond its scientific contribution, the findings underscore the practical value of SNMR in water resource management in semi-arid regions, by supporting extraction strategies targeting deeper water-bearing zones, informing recharge assessments, and strengthening resilience to drought conditions. Overall, the study highlights SNMR as a complementary and cost-effective tool capable of reducing uncertainty in groundwater exploration and contributing to sustainable water management.
