Strengthening road infrastructure and safety standards in Balochistan: pathways to promote education, economic development and prosperity

Year: 2025
Type: article
Abstract: Being the most expansive yet least developed province in Pakistan, Balochistan has suffered chronic underinvestment in road infrastructure and poor compliance with traffic safety regulations. Safety has been compromised, and even worse, the economic prospects of the region have been critically impaired. The present research will analyze how enhancing road infrastructure along with ensuring road safety will aid in economic advancement in Balochistan. The mixed-method methodology consists of the collection of secondary data from government publications, reports, and statistical records and first-hand qualitative evidence through interviews and surveys conducted with local stakeholders in the study area. Increased road accessibility was shown to be associated with increased economic outcomes such as trade facilitation, reduced transport costs, and improved mobility. Districts with good connectivity consistently register higher economic activity and low road traffic-related deaths. By the same token, the study establishes that there is an imbalance in infrastructural development between urban and rural areas, with rural districts bearing the brunt. Further, it points to wastage in resource allocation and enforcement of safety regulations. Evidence reveals that infrastructure deficits will keep hindering the development agenda if concrete policy changes and stakeholder engagement are not championed. The paper suggests ways to deal with the above consideration through integrated infrastructure planning and public-private partnership formulation.
